Nearly 11 percent less tourists in Cyprus

Flow of tourists in Cyprus has fallen by 10.8 percent during the first six months of 2009, according to official data.
Recession in Europe is reflected in the tourist market on the island, AFP notes. In the period January-June 2009 were registered 883 002 tourists visit the island on a background of 989 851 visits during the same period of 2008
In June, visits registered tourists were 260 931 on a background of 307 237 over the same month of 2008 and this represents a decrease of 15.1%.
Flow of tourists from Britain, where the majority of Tours are coming to the island decreased by 19.5%. With 18.8 percent and 10.8 percent fell in June tourists from Russia and Sweden.
Government encourages kipartsite to lie on the island. Only 12 percent of local citizens have traveled abroad in May, some experts explain the decline of travel by the fear of pig influenza.
The majority of Tours visiting Cyprus are EU countries affected by the recession.
Revenue from tourism in Cyprus fell by 3.5 percent in 2008 – from 1.85 billion euros in 2007 to 1.79 billion euros in 2008
Revenue from tourism represents around 12 percent of gross domestic product of Cyprus.
