New projects can lead to catastrophe

Extensive engineering schemes that aim to reflect sunlight or to suck up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, perhaps the only way to save Earth from uncontrolled global warming, say a group of scientists quoted by The Times.
According to them, however, these projects can have disastrous consequences, such as confusion of the distribution of rainfall, and should be used only as a last resort if efforts fail to reduce greenhouse emissions by other means.
Royal Society, which includes 1400 of the most famous scientists in the world, published a report on the plausibility and the possible dangers of technology to cool the Earth, known as geoinzhenerstvo. These ideas include the placement of artificial trees that collect emissions from the air, and imitation of volcanic activity by spraying sulfate particles of a few kilometers above the ground to divert the sun. Among the most extreme ideas to be spread trillions of small mirrors into space to act as a sun shield. Much cheaper option would be placing a fleet of 1500 ships to collect sea water and sprayed it with high funnels to create clouds that reflect solar lights. According to the report of the Royal Society, however, these clouds could cause distortions in the distribution of rainfall and lead to mass starvation in countries dependent on rainfall in the monsoon season.
The board of 12 scientists who prepared the report did conclude that all these approaches are theoretically applicable despite the potential side effects could be considered. They want to create a fund to provide £ 100 million a year for research on global geoinzhenernite technologies such as the UK they would pay 10 million pounds annually – an amount 10 times greater than that provided for Similar studies at the moment.
„An Inconvenient Truth is that unless we can significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions, waiting for us extremely uncomfortable future climate and geoinzhenerstvoto may be our only chance to limit further increases in temperature,“ said Prof . John Shepherd, who is chairman of the board. „Our research indicates that some geoinzhenerni techniques can cause serious harm to humans and ecosystems, but we still manage to not only take action to remove us from our dependence on them. Geoinzhenerstvoto and its consequences are the price we must pay for failing us in action against climate change, „said Prof. Shepherd. According to him, though it is better to start with a comprehensive research program now than to wait until the abrupt climate changes occur, since then there will be time for tests geoengeern projects.
