Unions Angry over Opel Sale Delay

General Motors’ delay in picking a buyer for its European division has angered workers at Opel.
GM was supposed to reach a decision last Friday on selling Opel and Vauxhall to either the Canadian-Austrian car parts firm Magna or rival bidder RHJ International.
The main union leader at Opel, Klaus Franz, has threatened “spectacular measures” if the delay continues beyond the end of this week. In a radio interview Franz said: “We have run out of patience.”
The German government – which has to guarantee loans for a sale to go ahead – said talks with GM will continue and now is not the time for confrontation.
According to one report GM is thinking about keeping Opel rather than selling a controlling interest in it.
Meanwhile, GM’s negotiations to sell its Hummer brand to the Chinese machinery maker Tengzhong have also been dogged by delays.
The deal has to be approved by China’s Ministry of Commerce. Over the weekend Chinese media reports said the ministry had give the bid the green light, but on Monday Tengzhong said it was still waiting for official word and talks are continuing with GM over Hummer.
