French Shop Less in August

French consumer spending fell in August.
It was much worse than economists had predicted – down one percent month-on-month – as shoppers bought fewer clothes, shoes and cars.
France, along with Germany, surprised financial markets with a return to economic growth in the second quarter of this year.
That was led by a rise in consumer spending, but economists fear rising unemployment could yet threaten the fragile recovery.
