New law antiimigratsionen grill Italy and EU

Italy adopted a law yesterday antiimigratsionen qualified illegal immigration as a crime. The law was a priority of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi after his return to power more than one years.

The Italian Senate voted on the text by 157 votes in favor, 124 against and three abstentions. Several provisions of the law already in force in the form of decree. Condemned by the opposition, human rights organizations and the Catholic Church, the law was adopted by a vote of confidence – an accelerated procedure introduced by the right hand.
Under the new law the penalty, which provides for illegal immigration is a fine of 5000 to 10 000 euros and immediate expulsion. Presentation of a residence permit or passport, which states place of birth of the child, becomes mandatory. Stay of illegal immigrants in detention centers increased to six months instead of the previous two, to establish their identity to their expulsion.
The European Commission wishes to consider the law, to verify its compatibility with Community law, said European Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security Jacques Barrot. Provisions for the automatic expulsion of entire categories are not acceptable, Barrot stressed and added that greater penalties for illegal immigrants in the new law and the automatic expulsion detention after two years may not apply to EU citizens.
