The German government expressed confidence on the sale of Opel

Although still nenasrochenata date for signing the deal on the sale of GM’s Opel and Vauxhall, the German government expressed confidence that the proposed 4.5 billion euro financial assistance for Opel are not related to a particular investor or investment plan.

This followed concerns expressed by the European Commission that the promised aid depends on the Canadian automotive parts maker Magna and its Russian partner Sberbank, which have chosen to buy Opel.
Commissioner for competition Neelie Kroes said that it would be in violation of strict state aid and EU internal market rules.
Cruz said that GM, which controls Opel, should be given a chance to reconsider its decision based on written assurances from Berlin that there were no conditions to prevent the closure of factories in Germany.
Magna and Sberbank were the only serious buyers. Another bidder, the investment firm RHJ International, said he no longer likes of Opel and instead has agreed to buy British company Wealth Management Kleinwort Benson from Commerzbank.
