Electricity price increase may be avoided

Maritsa Iztok-2 has offered a 6 to 7-percent drop in the wholesale price of the electricity produced by the thermal power plant (TPP) and purchased by the National Electric Company. That emerged after the head of the State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (SEWRC), Angel Semerdzhiev, and deputy minister of economy and energy Maya Hristova visited the TPP for the start of rehabilitation of units 5 through 8. The price drop is possible due to the decreased fuel costs and increased efficiency resulting from the rehabilitation of the first four TPP’s units last year. SEWRC will decide on the proposal next week. If it is accepted, the surge in electricity prices will be minimal. SEWRC has said earlier that electricity in Bulgaria will appreciate from July due to the global rise in energy prices.
