The basic interest rate (BIR), which is valid for the country since the beginning of this month is 1.71 percent, said the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB).
This is the lowest level of BIR not only from the beginning of the year, but from 1991 onwards since the BNB started to determine its level.
For the previous July, the level of primary interest was 2.24% and in January 2009 amounted to 5.17 per cent.
BIR, whose influence is limited in terms of the currency board is based on the index Leonia. This index reflects the interest rates on the interbank market for deposits intraday (overnight).
