Romania was declared in 2008 most irregularities in the pre-accession funds

Romania has reported to the European Commission in 2008 the biggest number of irregularities and suspected fraud on projects financed by the pre-accession funds and the European Union must take back 25.5 million euros because of the problems identified, reported Romanian Mediafaks agency. Last year, Romania has experienced the biggest growth – from 107% to 2007 – the number of cases in which there is suspected fraud or irregularities with respect to pre-accession funds (PHARE, ISPA, SAPARD).
Suspicions are reported on the 246 project and target amounts were increased by 90%, stated in a report to the European Commission’s case amounts to more than 10 000 euros. EC should come from Romania 25.5 million euros because of irregularities in the absorption of EU pre-entry, which represents half the total amount of 51 million euros, which the Committee should come from 12 countries that joined after 2004, plus Turkey. So far the Commission has recovered 18.3 million euros in Romania. According to the report of the commission, Romania and Bulgaria were reported in 2008 to 73 percent of such cases registered at EU level, while the remaining 10 countries that joined since 2004 have made 19 percent of the total number of files, a candidate accession of Croatia and Turkey – seven percent of the total. The total value of the target amounts were increased by 152% in the case of Romania and Bulgaria and eight percent for the other 10 countries included in the EU since 2004, announced BNR.
