40 million Americans live below the poverty line in the U.S.

According to data in 2008 40 million Americans live below poverty in the United States. This is the worst figure for 11 years and the reason for this is largely the effect of the global economic crisis. In percentage of people living below the poverty line in the United States were 13.2 percent for 2008 compared to 12.5 percent for 2007.
